· Ephemeral flags

· EPHEMERAL FLAGS (Exposition Text)

Translation by Alfonso Legaz

The body has its immediate limit in the skin, but its horizon is unlimited. If Italo Calvino contributed the invisible cities, and Espinoza the unknown as to how much a body can do, González Fornés, in Ephemeral flags, has brought together both questions. It is inevitable to think that transnational origins such as the Spanish-Portuguese Sephardic of the rebellious philosopher, added to the visual story of cities invisible to all but those who map with chalk the itinerary that led them to them, feed that which makes us most singular: the porous and the unknown.

The personal dimension of the migratory flow is the basis of the construction of Ephemeral flags, and it is not personal because the person who orders and names this human reality is an active part of the old displacement of bodies across borders in search of new living spaces, but because a significant part of his close and affective world is nourished by the protagonists of this demographic flow. It is through the ordering of the event and its naming that Ephemeral flags produces a part of reality and amplifies it. It is, therefore, more than existenciary evidence that this corpuscular dimension of the migratory flow with a face, memory and personal map has settled in France, the USA, the UK, Germany… This form of existenciary is constructed from a world of affections, it is born ascribed to a generation, they are born close in time, with affections and age shared with the one who constructs it. It can be affirmed, therefore, that it is a significant sample of “their own”, those we call “the ours” from the other side, those who to a greater or lesser extent identify generationally with someone who is both inside and outside the construction. Those who, after being portrayed, in turn form an invisible portrait of the builder.

The modality of the visible speaks of an invisible journey lived in the solitude of the skin inwards, which is said to a close, González Fornés. The “citizen of the world” dimension is summoned and ends up expressed in a map made of chalk, in a furrow in the sand. The ephemeral becomes visible at our feet in order to be doubly ephemeral, the itinerary followed by the bodies is established, inventoried and abandoned on a pavement offered to the other and to time. This journey is always an invisible journey, Italo Calvino would point out, like the city that is discovered at the end of it: no resident can see the cities discovered by those who arrive in their own city for the first time. But the performative act of the travellers drawing on the ground of their portrait a map of their past in motion, rehearses an ephemeral graphic that, mediated by the photograph, is fixed in a time-without-space by that form of eternal return. A wide photographic framing for a posing that in many cases underlines the fragility of the body and at the same time its uncalculated power. In these portraits, the context is connotatively protagonised as an essential form of being. In these portraits, the context is connotatively protagonised as an essential form of being. The choice of an open contemporary photographic framing is conceptual. In it we read a new idea as the old idea of the autonomous self weakens, which is why the ground matters here as a verb. If it is necessary to exist, the I says I-flight-sky, I-swim-sea. The photographic, broad and social frame that houses the I here marks its plural-singular condition. This is how contemporary machines, satellites, search engines look at us. The being of human existence needs to choose its ground, even if it does not belong to it, even if it has never belonged to it.

But blue on blue objects sink into the sea, full of men, women and children in a common blue until they die. Interrupted their invisible paths, with no city to draw their journey in chalk. They are layers of meaning in the same generation, but without a voice. The invisible journey of the poor has no representation. It is an experience that González Fornés also comes into contact with, a construction of reality that he and his people, and us, have to integrate.

Ephemeral flags

Identities are the set of manifestations derived from a way of living. Therefore, a group has a determined identity from the coexistence that is produced by the people who compose it. This relation is increasingly dissociated to the place from where the individual comes, since the collectives in the cities usually are transnational. To the extent that communication between people has not only gone beyond all these areas but has multiplied exponentially, we have moved on to a global framework in which local brands are diluted with the contribution of new identities, coming from other territories. With this project I construct the imaginary of a system without flags, from people who are close and their histories of mobility, because cities are plurinational in the same way that a neighbourhood is a company and many of the individuals are plurinational, the right to be a citizen must be transnational. Above the states, let us hope that one day the project of acting from diversity, the common values and interests of humanity will be defended, supported by the logic of interdependence from the local to the global. The project contrasts this very common history of friends who have taken root outside, (USA, France, Germany, London) with those who have recently returned, those who have arrived from other countries. All these flows draw the most important identity question of the contemporary world: home in the country or in the city? small city or projection and work in a big city? stay or seek a change in another culture? The starting point of the work is to think of a new concept of flag. That is why I select people who are very close to me and who have been citizens of several countries. These people draw in the street where they currently reside the countries or cities where they lived before. This route will be an ephemeral mark that is erased as people walk down the street. I document this game of drawing in the street and the disappearance of the mark. These marks, like scars, tell us about the people who inhabit the territory through the game in the public space, a relationship that modulates with time, which is superimposed on other marks and that from the project are presented as a metaphor of coexistence and possible flag. Those who appear are people with whom I have a relationship of friendship and whose processes of adaptation to their new culture I have followed. The interest in documenting their process at this time is due to the fact that I am wondering whether to continue living in my city and the most natural way to resolve this doubt is to ask those who left and those who arrived and those who returned what their motives are. Therefore, apart from documenting this action of drawing their route, I add some images that illustrate the reasons why they remain in their current residence, sometimes they are places, sometimes they are actions, as a whole it is a portrait that does not distinguish nationalities and that points out how universal are the reasons to emigrate. It will not be today’s for tomorrow, but in the long run we are inevitably destined to determine ourselves as what will really be the only common denominator of an exorbitantly hyper-connected generation: our condition as people, in essence, our true homeland.
